Pre-Emergence Re-Emergence

Hey again everyone! We hope you’ve been enjoying your summer. It’s been a hot one, so hopefully you’ve been keeping your lawn and landscape plants well watered. As the dog days of summer begin to wind down it’s time to start thinking about giving your lawn a pre-emergence treatment. We’ll start seeing fall and winter weeds before we know it. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Old Ben’s wise words definitely apply to your lawn. Prevention is vital because once the weeds establish themselves it is a long fight to make your lawn weed free again. Below are a few of them cooler season weeds to keep an eye out for.

Annual Bluegrass

One of the most common weeds in GA. Bluegrass might be a pretty bright green, but its an aggressive weed that can wreak havoc on lawns if it isn’t taken care of promptly.

Henbit

We’ve all seen this eye-sore. It’s dark green leaves and purple buds are incredibly prominent in your yard. Its especially noticeable once the grass begins to go dormant. Fun fact: While ugly, Henbit is actually edible and a member of the mint family.

Bittercress

At least Henbit is edible. We can’t think of anything good to say about Bittercress. It’s tall, ugly, and hairy. Once it has established itself in your lawn you’ll have a frustrating fight ahead of you. It has a rather long taproot and is very resilient.

That’s just a handful of the yard pests that are waiting to invade once it starts to cool down. If you’re interested in learning more or need help identifying the weeds in your yard feel free to give us a call and we’d be happy to assist you.
